Bali is located in an archipelago of great
natural diversity. About 17 percent of the world’s total bird
species are living within the islands of Indonesia. Thirty
seven percent of the world’s known fish are found here,
that’s 7000. Not to mention butterflies: the Indonesian
archipelago ranks first, for amphibian animals, it ranks fifth
and seventh for flowering plants.
Some 30.000 plant species can be
found here. Several species are endemic, live nowhere but have
their habitat here. One of the reasons for this natural
richness is the fact that the archipelago covers three
different zones of flora and fauna localization : the Asian
zone, the Australian zone, and the intermediate zone.
Bali is situated in Asian zone of
Indonesia, characterized by big carnivore mammals, such as the
Tiger, or smaller ones such as the Black Panther or the
Leopard; big herbivores such as the deer and the wild buffalo.
Bali’s geographical
condition plays a great role in the variety of the fauna and
flora. Some areas of the island are still occupied by rain
forest. Wild orchids, ferns, moss, and other plants requiring
a high humidity are found in the mountain areas of the
island. Wood plants like teakwood, Banyan tree (ficus
elastica) and Pule tree (alstonia scholaris) grow in gorges
which are numerous in Bali. Along the rivers and streams
also grow bamboo, which is used in construction and many other
purposes. The shore of Bali shores are abundant in animal and
floral species such as the mangrove forest which
contains all sorts of big and small crabs, shrimps and
fishes.
CLIMATE
Bali has such a
mild and agreeable climate the whole year round. The sunny
days within dry season between May and September are warm and
pleasant, while in rainy season between October and April,
tropical shower will alternate. The average temperature of the
day in coastal areas varies from about 28°C(82°F) during May,
June, July, to about 30°C(86°F) in March and October.
It is approximately one and half
hours drive to the highland where temperature varies from 16°C
to 26°C and it is known to drop to about 8°C during the
night. The humidity is high (from a minimum of 70% to a
maximum of 95%). The weather is most pleasant between May
to September.
